BPC-157 is one of the most talked-about research peptides online, and also one of the most over-claimed. Here's what the published literature actually covers — and, just as important, what it doesn't.
What BPC-157 is
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide fragment derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It was first studied in the 1990s and early 2000s, mostly in the context of gastrointestinal healing in rodent models.
What's actually been studied
- Gut healing models. The bulk of the early literature is animal studies on gastric ulcers and intestinal fistulas, where BPC-157 was associated with faster healing markers compared to controls.
- Tendon and ligament studies. A separate line of rodent research has looked at tendon-to-bone healing, with some studies reporting improved healing metrics in injured rat Achilles tendons.
- Mechanistic work. Several papers propose that BPC-157 acts partly through angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and modulation of the nitric oxide system, though the full mechanism isn't settled.
Where the evidence is thin
Almost all of the available data is in rodents, not humans. There is no robust human clinical trial data establishing safety or efficacy for the uses commonly discussed online. Claims you'll see repeated across forums — specific dosing protocols, injection-site healing anecdotes, stacking recommendations — are not backed by the studies themselves, which used controlled lab conditions that don't map onto self-administration.
The regulatory picture
BPC-157 is not FDA-approved for any human use, and in the US it was added to the FDA's list of substances that compounding pharmacies are restricted from using, over safety-data concerns. It's sold by research chemical vendors strictly for laboratory research, not for human use.

The mechanistic research is genuinely interesting, and it's easy to see why it's generated so much interest. But "interesting animal data" and "established human safety profile" are two very different things, and a lot of the online discussion blurs that line. If you're researching this compound, read the primary studies rather than secondhand summaries — including this one — and pay attention to species, dose, and route of administration in each paper, since those details rarely survive the trip to a forum post.
