GHK-Cu is one of the more mechanistically well-characterized peptides discussed online, with a research history going back decades. That history is mostly animal and cell-culture work, which matters for how confidently the skincare claims get made.
What GHK-Cu is
GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide (three amino acids: glycine, histidine, lysine) that forms a complex with copper ions. It's studied for its role in tissue remodeling, a process involving collagen and elastin synthesis, growth factor activity, and antioxidant effects.
What's actually been studied
- Foundational mechanistic work. GHK-Cu at very low concentrations has been shown in lab studies to stimulate both synthesis and breakdown of collagen and glycosaminoglycans, part of normal tissue remodeling (foundational review, PubMed; regenerative and protective actions review, PMC).
- Wound healing in animal models. GHK-Cu accelerated wound healing and increased markers like blood vessel formation and antioxidant enzyme activity in rabbit, rat, mouse, and pig wound models, including diabetic and ischemic wound models specifically (GHK Peptide as a Natural Modulator of Multiple Cellular Pathways in Skin Regeneration, PMC, animal studies).
Where the evidence is thin
The mechanistic and animal-model case for GHK-Cu's role in tissue remodeling is genuinely substantial and has held up across decades of research. Where I'd urge caution is in the specific numeric claims that circulate online, like exact percentage improvements in wrinkle depth or wound closure rates, from more recent studies. I was not able to independently verify specific, recent randomized controlled trial statistics for topical GHK-Cu against a source I could confirm, so I'm not repeating unverified numbers here. The underlying mechanistic and preclinical story is solid; be skeptical of precise percentage claims attached to it without a clear, checkable source.
The regulatory picture
GHK-Cu is not FDA-approved as a drug. Copper peptide complexes are used in cosmetic formulations, which follow cosmetic rather than drug regulation, a much lower bar than drug approval. The research-chemical version sold for laboratory use is a separate product from formulated cosmetic products. It's sold by research chemical vendors strictly for laboratory research, not for human use.

GHK-Cu has one of the more legitimate mechanistic stories on this list, decades of consistent lab and animal findings around tissue remodeling. But I'd separate that solid foundation from the specific, often suspiciously precise percentage claims you'll see attached to it in marketing copy. The mechanism being real doesn't mean every number quoted alongside it is.
